Radio - a free entity... right? Well, for the listener maybe, but just like any other business, it costs money to operate. And "Community Radio" is an entirely different animal compared to "regular radio". What makes it different?

Regular - or commercial radio - is exactly what it's name implies. It is a commercially operated part of a corporate structure, whose sole purpose is to generate revenue for profit. This is accomplished through advertising sales and other commercial promotions.

Community Radio, on the other hand, is not permitted to sell advertising. It is classified as "community" radio because it is supported by the communities that it serves through donations, membership and sponsorship. Business sponsors benefit with radio announcements in consideration for their support, while listeners support the organization that operates the station.

KBHQ-FM is licensed to North Arkansas Performing Artists Coaltion (NAPAC), a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit organization based in Harrison, AR. NAPAC's mission is "...to promote Independent music and those who perform it, while supporting music programs in schools. Through the functions of KBHQ-FM, "Indie" artists can have an outlet for their music to reach radio listeners in Harrison, Arkansas - AND AROUND THE WORLD!

But more than the music, NAPAC also utilizes KBHQ-FM for the betterment of those communities within the listening area, encompassing a five county area with its FM radio signal, as well as to devoted online listeners around the globe. Working with other local nonprofit organizations, NAPAC is able to orchestrate performances and events which not only promote the artists,but also supports area food and blood drives, disaster recovery efforts, and so much more - supporting the adage which says, "it takes a community to make a community"
